The Power of Journaling – When God Speaks

We’ve all heard how having ajournal or writing your thoughts down can be an excellent way to document your thoughts for the day or for the week, depending on how often you choose to journal. Well, I’d like to challenge that process precisely a bit further and encourage daily writing in your journal as a means to pull out of you the very thing that God has placed in your Spirit.

God does not speak to us in exactly one way, about one topic. There may be a multitude of things going on in your life that God is trying to get in order and your thoughts could be all over the place. Perhaps you are dealing with family issues, struggling in school, needing to move off your job to either a better opportunity you know you deserve or simply taking the steps to move into full entrepreneurship. On the other hand, you are already in full swing of your entrepreneurial dream and you feel something is missing and you know it’s that tug in your spirit to go deeper.  Let me encourage you to lean on the following scriptures:

  • “And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it” (Habbakuk 2:2, KJV)
  • “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end” (Jeremiah 29:11, KJV)
  • “Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. [ Following Paul’s Example ] All of us, then, who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you" (Philippians 3: 13-15, NIV).

I love these scriptures; God is very clear in his word that he not only has a plan for our lives, but he makes it clear to us, and we should write it down. Now this may seem much for some, but having several journals can be a way to keep precise thoughts and plan God has for you clear. Having many journals makes it easier to go back and reference to an exact area in your life that the Holy Spirit is downloading to you for that particular situation. It’s not uncommon to have a journal for:

  • Daily prayer and meditation with God about your day.
  • Your business, changes that need to happen, particular client collaborations you need to pray about. God’s word is very clear about forming alliances/partnerships that was not ordained by him, “Woe to the obstinate children,” declares the Lord, “to those who carry out plans that are not mine, forming an alliance, but not by my Spirit, heaping sin upon sin; (Isaiah 30:1, NIV). If you want your business to be successful pray about your alliances first.
  • Studying the books of the bible. God may lead you to study specific books of the bible, what a wonderful way to document what God is saying to you about a particular situation in your life by having you study that very situation in his word.

These are just a few examples; I encourage you; consider having multiple types of journals in your arsenal. If you are not using a journal to write, please begin, God is waiting for you to write the vision and make it plain.
